Tour Notes: Things To Do Before Getting On The Road

Posted on March 30, 2010 with 0 comments

For the past few US tours, my mother has come with me as my road manager.

Today’s business is going over the itinerary and making sure we know where we’re going and when we need to be there. For a few dates, we still need to arrange places to stay. I set up my laptop and we sit side-by-side at my mother’s desk, sending emails and Googling directions.

Working together keeps us on task - no hour-long tea breaks, no aimless web surfing, no solitaire. It's been raining steadily since I arrived; cold, thick drops spatter the windows.

I take a break to call my spouse and my mother disappears discreetly. Forty-five minutes later, she reappears, slightly damp. She has been cleaning the gutters on the roof - a job that usually requires two people, a ladder, and a hose. Instead, she has climbed out her study window to clear the debris out of the gutters by hand and let the rain rinse them out.

“So that’s done - and it wasn’t even on my list!” she says.
